environmentalists who say we need to get
rid of cars. And the truth of the matter
is that about 70% of the economy depends
on cars and vans and what you might call
independently driven stuff. The whole
supply chain, that smug bastard who
goes, "No, no, no. I take the bus to
everywhere." Yes. But you eat food
that's been delivered in a van. All
you've done is you've outsourced the
driving to van drivers. You haven't
actually escaped from the car. What
happens is you have walking and other
forms and then the bicycle kicks in
provided it's not uphill and it's not
raining and you don't have any luggage
and you don't have any children and then
there's a there's a certain distance
both for commuting into big cities and
for intercity journeys where the train
is really good and then right at the
right hand side it's got to be a plane
okay you're not going to drive to you
know you're not going to drive to
Australia the car which is close second
best for practically every journey of
any distance doesn't matter what time of
day it is whether you have passengers
Whether you have luggage, whether it's
raining, the car, regardless of any of
those other contextual factors, will do
the job really, really well. When I go
to Manchester to see my daughter, you
know, if I'm going for two nights, I'll
take the train. If I'm going for four
nights, I'll drive.
