What if your phone could run AI models
with no internet and no subscription? A
small lab called Desert Ant Labs just
released 18 tiny AI models. Once you
download them, they run on your phone
with no internet. Each one trained for a
single task, and they're all completely
free to try. Here's what you can do with
them. First, face and eye. Face finds
the same person across all your photos
and videos. Eye ranks your shots and
groups the near duplicates. Put them
together and imagine asking your phone
to collect the best photos of someone
into an album without uploading your
library. Second, redact. It replaces
names, addresses, or card numbers with
placeholders before a message goes to a
cloud AI, then puts them back in the
answer. It catches about nine out of 10,
and the model is only 12 megabytes. So,
a small model on your phone controls
what information leaves it. Third, this
one is already real. Detail, Apple's
iPad app of the year, swapped its cloud
AI for six of these models. You drop in
a 10-minute video, and 14 seconds later
on an iPhone, it's edited, cut into
clips, and titled with zero network
calls. It used to take 2 minutes in the
cloud and cost them thousands of euros a
month. Fourth, imagine filming your
grandma's birthday for 2 hours. Who
works out who's talking by watching
their mouths, and Vaz writes down every
word. Tap her face, and you jump
straight to everything she said. The
video never leaves your phone. By the
way, if you build apps, you can try them
today. Install the Desert Ant CLI, test
redact on any sentence, then run setup,
and Claude code gets a skill for all of
them.
