Best said Wednesday it had downgraded the financial strength rating of NASW Insurance Company, a Washington D.C.-domiciled captive insurer, to B++ from A-. NASWIC’s credit ratings remain under review with negative implications, the Oldwick, New Jersey-based rating agency said. NASWIC, established in 2007, is a for-profit subsidiary of NASW Assurance Services, which is wholly owned by the National Association of Social Workers. The captive provides reinsurance for NASW’s professional liability insurance program. The downgrade of NASWIC’s operating performance assessment to adequate from strong reflects deteriorating underwriting results beginning in 2025 and future uncertainty regarding overall performance as a standalone entity, Best said. “As a result, metrics are better aligned with peers as adequate,” Best said. “NASWIC’s ratings will remain under review with negative implications reflective of additional time needed for management to fully execute the prospective business plans, as well as time needed for regulatory approval and establishment of a risk retention group,” Best said. NASWIC’s balance sheet strength remains very strong and its enterprise risk management is appropriate, Best said.
