ICE would subcontract with an insurer to provide professional liability coverage of up to $500,000 for officers participating in its fast-growing 287(g) program, according to a document released Friday by the agency. The government would reimburse premium costs up to $250 per year per officer under the plan. The document outlines a plan to hire a contractor to help provide outreach, training and communications support for the program. The contractor would hire the insurer and process the reimbursements. Local law enforcement could only use its own insurance “if it satisfies the PLI coverage requirements for credentialed (law enforcement officers) performing 287(g) duties, including required coverage limits, scope of covered activities, and geographic applicability,” according to the document. ICE has signed agreements with more than 2,300 local agencies in 39 states to help it reach its goal of rapidly scaling up immigration enforcement arrests, the agency reported. In June, Pennsylvania’s risk pool excluded liability coverage for local law enforcement agencies participating in immigration enforcement, according to state media reports. ICE did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
