Off Beat Feb 23, 2026 A new dating scam is turning sweethearts into insurance suspects, according to The Guardian. Insurers in the United Kingdom are warning about a twist on classic romance fraud in which scammers borrow their identities to cash in on bogus insurance claims. As reported by the news outlet, the Insurance Fraud Bureau says it has seen a growing number of cases where fraudsters groom romantic partners into participating in staged accidents or false injury claims. Rather than asking for money, as traditional romance schemes have played out, scammers persuade victims to say they witnessed a crash, were a passenger in a vehicle, or even to take out an insurance policy before filing a fake claim. In some cases, victims are given scripts explaining what “happened” and coached on how to respond to insurer phone calls. The fraudster may create urgency, pressuring the victim to act quickly. While victims may not lose money upfront, the consequences can be severe. Participating in a fraudulent claim can land someone on the insurance fraud register, making it harder to obtain coverage and potentially affecting their credit profile. The IFB says embarrassment may be keeping cases underreported. Authorities urge anyone asked by an online romantic interest to take part in illegal activity to report the profile on the dating platform and contact police.
