The storm developed on Wednesday and grew into a Category 3 hurricane by Friday, but the National Hurricane Center said it may weaken before landfall because of wind shear. Losses from the storm are not expected to “meaningfully” influence Jan. 1 reinsurance renewals due to the abundance of available reinsurance capital, Gallagher Re, the reinsurance brokerage unit of Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., said in a report. Category 2 and 3 hurricanes have historically caused insured losses averaging in the low-to-mid-single-digit billions of dollars, Gallagher Re said. Model guidance suggests Isaias will make landfall near the Florida-Alabama border as a Category 2 storm, Gallagher Re said. It is expected to bring hurricane-force winds and a 6- to 9-foot storm surge. Insured losses may depend largely on the track the storm ultimately takes, according to another report from Marsh Re Friday, which also put the projected loss estimate in the mid-single billions. “Slight deviations in track and intensity will significantly change loss outcomes. A more westerly track favors higher losses into Mobile Bay, while a more easterly track will keep losses lower,” the Marsh Re report said. Isaias will be the first storm to make mainland U.S. landfall since Milton hit Florida in 2024, Gallagher Re said.
