Cybercriminals working in distinct roles form a highly organized community, said Devon Ackerman, global head of digital forensics and incident response at cybersecurity firm Cybereason. Initial access brokers identify threat actors; threat actors build malware; and selling groups manage the infrastructure used to conduct attacks, he said during the Professional Liability Underwriting Society’s Cyber Symposium on Wednesday. Insurers may have to adapt policies in the face of advancements among cyber criminals, said Gwenn Cujdik, incident response and cyber services lead at Axa XL North America. “Traditional policies can cover a lot of the things that we’re seeing, but I think that there are going to be some things on the horizon. I’m very curious about how the policies will analyze that,” she said. Data governance protocols and practices for businesses and organizations must grow and match the “velocity” of the changes among threat actors, said Amy S. Mushahwar, partner and chair of the data privacy, security, safety and risk management practice at Lowenstein Sandler LLP. The rapidly evolving nature of cybercrime has led to a shift in how companies see the function of the chief information security officer, said Jay Vinda, global chief information security officer and cyber risk engineering lead for Mosaic Insurance. Previously, the CISO was charged with preventing cyber incidents. Now, there is a greater emphasis on response and recovery functions should an incident occur, in addition to the defensive role, he said.
