The 2025 gain was driven by premium growth and lower extreme weather losses, according to the report, from data and analytics company Verisk and the American Property Casualty Insurance Association. Net written premiums rose 5.1% to $740.7 billion in the first nine months of 2025, up from $704.8 billion during the same period in 2024. The industry combined ratio through the first nine months of 2025 improved to 94.0% from 97.9% for the same period last year, the first time in a decade the combined ratio fell below 95% through the third quarter, according to the report. Policyholder surplus increased to $1.20 trillion through the first nine months last year, from $1.12 trillion at the same time in 2024. Net income for the first nine months of 2025, however, declined 23.7% to $98.74 billion as net investment gains for the period dropped 42.3% to $78.97 billion.
