More than nine in 10 respondents saw attorney advertising in the past year, with TV remaining the leading medium, according to the Insurance Research Council’s 2026 report on public opinions about attorney involvement in auto insurance claims. The online survey of more than 2,000 respondents suggests consumers have received the message. And some have thoughts. Most believe attorney advertising increases claims and lawsuits, while roughly half believe it raises insurance costs. Whether they reach that conclusion before or after the next commercial break is unclear. When an accident happens, though, legal help is a popular call. Nearly one in four respondents reported filing an auto injury claim in the past three years. Of those claimants, about seven in 10 consulted or hired an attorney, often within days of the accident. Asked to explain in their own words why they would hire a lawyer, consumers most often pointed to injury severity, fair compensation and questions about fault. The most commonly cited reason to skip legal representation? The cost. Apparently, consumers want someone to make the other side pay. They’d just prefer that someone not be too expensive.
