OSHA said last week it cited Janesville, Wisconsin-based IPMF LLC, operating as NaturPak, after incidents in February and March when kettle lids opened under pressure, releasing steam, hot liquid and other material onto workers. In the Feb. 12 incident, pressure built up after a vent line became clogged, causing a kettle lid to open unexpectedly. Two workers were hospitalized, and one later died from complications related to the injuries, OSHA said. On March 18, three workers were burned when a kettle lid opened under pressure. Two workers died and the third was hospitalized. OSHA issued serious and repeat citations alleging hazards related to the kettles’ design and use, fall protection, lockout/tagout procedures, employee training, personal protective equipment and access to emergency water. The agency proposed $115,850 in penalties for the February incident and $248,250 for the March incident. OSHA previously cited a NaturPak operation in Janesville in 2022 for a serious machine-guarding violation following an injury referral, according to agency records. The $9,324 proposed penalty was reduced to $7,770 in an informal settlement. Private equity firm PPC acquired NaturPak from Trivest Partners earlier this year.
