Body Text

Washington lawmakers are considering a bill that would create a pilot program to expand treatment and research for post-traumatic stress disorder within the state’s workers compensation system.
S.B. 6293, proposed at the request of the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries, would amend existing workplace safety and insurance statutes to allow funding and development of targeted PTSD prevention and care initiatives.
Under the proposal, L&I would be permitted to allocate money from the state’s Medical Aid Fund to support workplace safety, return-to-work programs, and behavioral health initiatives — including PTSD-focused projects targeted at occupations with high exposure to trauma.
That includes projects focused on occupations with “high risk” of repeated trauma exposure, workplace behavioral health programs such as suicide prevention and mental health training. The department would also gain rule-making authority to implement the new provisions.
