Mr. Sabaté, a six-time Spanish champion and Olympic newcomer, is hoping to bring his Minions-inspired routine to Italy this week after Universal Studios agreed — at least in principle — to let him skate to music from the animated film franchise, according to the BBC. The routine, performed throughout the 2025-26 season in a yellow T-shirt and blue overalls, had become a fan favorite and an unlikely test case for the reach of intellectual property rights in elite sport, the news outlet reported. On Monday, the skater said the routine was effectively grounded after Universal Pictures withheld permission to use the music at the Games. By Tuesday, however, the studio had reversed course, granting approval “for this one special occasion” following what Mr. Sabaté described as a wave of public support on social media. “Because of you, Universal Studios reconsidered,” he said, adding that a few administrative details remain unresolved for other music used in the program. The Spanish Olympic Committee confirmed there are still formalities to finalize, according to the outlet.
