Costco’s beloved “natural” rotisserie chicken is now being accused in federal court of quietly harboring ingredients that don’t exactly suggest straight from the farm, as reported by ABC 7 in Southern California.
According to court filings in San Diego federal court, two California shoppers allege that Costco falsely markets its Kirkland Signature Seasoned Rotisserie Chicken as containing “no preservatives,” even though the label lists ingredients including sodium phosphate and carrageenan.
The plaintiffs claim they wouldn’t have bought the chicken had they known the additives were present. The lawsuit alleges Costco has “systemically cheated customers out of tens — if not hundreds — of millions of dollars.”
In the complaint, which suggests people are buying a lot of $4.99 chickens, the lawsuit targets Costco’s website and in-store signage, which allegedly assure shoppers that the chicken contains “no preservatives.”
“Costco’s own ingredient list contradicts its marketing,” the attorney said in a statement. “That’s unlawful, and it’s unfair.” Costco has not yet responded in court.
