Nearly a quarter of pet owners say a pet’s persistent negative reaction to a new partner would be an immediate relationship dealbreaker, according to a recent survey released by Spot Pet Insurance. The insurer commissioned Pollfish to survey 3,600 U.S. dog and cat owners ages 18 to 64 in August about how their animals influence housing, relationships and financial decisions. Overall, 83% said they would take a pet’s disapproval seriously enough that it could affect a relationship’s future. But just 14% considered a formal “pet prenup” essential before moving in together or marrying. The four-legged household members also wield considerable influence over real estate decisions. Three-quarters of respondents said they would pass on an otherwise ideal home if a landlord or homeowners association prohibited their pet’s breed or weight. And retirement may have to wait until the dog approves. Forty-two percent said they would delay their target retirement age by two to five years if working longer would allow them to afford premium medical care and comfort for an aging pet. Forty-one percent planned to set aside funds or property for their pet’s care in their estate plans, including 13% who would prioritize that funding over inheritances for extended human family.
