One Canadian town has been battling something rather less conventional: rotten fish sauce. Crews have begun removing about 110 tanks of fermented fish sauce left behind when the Atlantic Seafood Sauce Co. closed more than 20 years ago in St. Mary’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, The Associated Press reported. Each tank held about 3,000 gallons of fish sauce that continued to ferment long after the factory was abandoned. As the building deteriorated, the smell drifted across the town of about 300 people whenever the wind blew the wrong way. Mayor Steve Ryan described the odor as “the worst rotted fish you ever smelled in your lifetime, times 100,” the wire service reported. Workers will drain the tanks, mix the liquid with peat moss to absorb it, then transport the material to a specially lined disposal pit. The 1.7 million Canadian ($1.21 million) cleanup, which will be funded by the province, is expected to take several months. Residents who raised a stink about the problem have finally gotten some relief.
