Auto liability , Claims Management , Risk Management , Technology May 4, 2026 PHILADELPHIA — A confluence of social inflation, emerging risks and talent shortages is reshaping the claims environment, a panel of experts said. Claims are becoming more complex and longer-tailed, with “more nuclear verdicts” and unpredictable liability outcomes, David Wald, president and co-founder of Aclaimant in Chicago, said during a session at the Risk & Insurance Management Society’s Riskworld conference Monday. New exposures are also blurring traditional lines of coverage. Autonomous vehicles and other technologies are creating uncertainty over how claims should be classified, while internal pressures, including demands to deploy artificial intelligence, are mounting, Mr. Wald said. At the same time, the sector faces a looming “silver tsunami” of retirements that threatens to drain institutional knowledge, he said. The system is increasingly fragile with policies and procedures changing quickly, said Ross Goren, a partner at Weber Gallagher in Philadelphia. “Back in the day, things would take a couple of years to happen; now, tomorrow it happens,” he said. Solutions to the problem should center on building more agile, integrated claims operations. Organizations should focus on asking the right questions, aligning internal and external partners and connecting data, analytics and decision-making, Mr. Wald said. “The single best thing you can do is put yourself in a position to move fast … and make better decisions every day,” he said. Equally critical is collaboration across departments and partners, Mr. Goren said. “Everyone has to be on board and if they’re fighting, it’s not going to work,” he said.
