In Great American Insurance Company v. Twin Cities Dance and Entertainment, LLC , U.S. District Judge Nancy E. Brasel of the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota entered judgment for the event center Tuesday after an August 3 jury verdict. In May 2020, protests following Floyd’s death left the St. Paul event center with smoke damage, vandalism and theft; its landlord terminated its lease about a month later. Great American initially paid more than $1 million on the claim, but when Twin Cities Dance sought an additional $1.8 million in business-income losses, the dispute went to appraisal, and a panel awarded the venue nearly $986,000. Rather than pay, Great American sued in 2023, arguing the event center had manipulated records and that its event cancellations stemmed from pandemic shutdown orders, not the riots. Twin Cities Dance countered that Great American breached the policy and acted in bad faith. In 2025, Judge Brasel rejected the event center’s bad-faith claim and sanctioned the center for losing text messages relevant to the case, finding the company “knew or should have known” the messages would be relevant to current or future litigation and had intended to deprive Great American of the information’s use in the litigation. Even so, the jury that heard the case found Twin Cities Dance had not acted willfully to defraud Great American and had not concealed or misrepresented any material facts tied to its claim, leaving the roughly $986,000 appraisal award intact.
