This compares with the 14.7% decline seen at January 1 renewals and the 16% drop at April 1, according to a report Monday from Howden Re. Record reinsurance capital, both traditional and alternative, tipped the market in favor of cedents, the report said. Reinsurance dedicated capital increased 11% to a record $648 billion in 2025, including $513 million in traditional capital and $135 million in alternative capital, Gallagher Re reported at the start of May. “Abundant traditional capacity and a catastrophe bond market on course for one of its largest first halves on record absorbed a meaningful increase in mid-year demand,” the report said. “The supply-demand balance shifted decisively in cedents’ favor with dedicated reinsurance capital at record levels, supported by growth in alternative capital.” Demand at June 1 renewals rose “significantly,” driven in part by policyholders exiting Florida’s Citizens Property Insurance Corporation, the state-backed insurer of last resort, leaving more cedents seeking reinsurance in the open market. Although the renewal negotiations went longer than usual, placements were completed with “capacity comfortably outpacing demand,” Howden Re said.
