Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran was fined after pleading guilty to keeping his uninsured 1966 Aston Martin while it was undergoing a yearslong restoration and electric-vehicle conversion, according to BBC reporting. Sheeran told the court he believed the Durham workshop restoring the silver classic carried the necessary insurance and noted the car had been off the road since 2021, inoperable and never under his physical control. He said there was no risk to the public because the vehicle had not been driven during the restoration. The U.K.’s Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, however, determined the car did not meet insurance requirements in December 2025. Sheeran was ordered to pay a $898 fine, $135 in court costs and a $359 victim surcharge after pleading guilty. In a letter to the court, Sheeran called the lapse a “genuine administrative misunderstanding” and said he never received an earlier offer to resolve the matter with an out-of-court penalty, adding he would have paid it immediately. He also apologized for taking up court time. The case serves as a reminder that, unlike a catchy chorus, insurance obligations don’t necessarily take a break just because a car does. Even a classic Aston Martin getting an electric makeover can end up generating a different kind of charge.
