The alleged hotel price inflation? That could be costing you more. A lawsuit accuses Expedia Group of keeping hotel rates artificially high, even for travelers who never booked through its websites, The New York Times reported. Filed this month in federal court in Washington state, the suit seeks class-action status and alleges Expedia violated federal antitrust laws by enforcing contracts that blocked hotels from offering cheaper rooms through their own websites, loyalty portals or call centers. According to the complaint, hotels that offered lower prices on competing platforms risked becoming harder to find on Expedia’s sites. The alleged result: room prices inflated by 15% to 30%, matching the commissions Expedia charges hotels. The complaint covers brands including Expedia.com, Hotels.com, Travelocity, Orbitz and CheapTickets. Three travelers say they paid inflated prices for recent stays. Expedia disputes the allegations. A spokesperson called them “meritless” and told the Times the company has provided transparency, competitive offerings and better value for more than 30 years. There is skepticism outside the company, too. Travel commentator Gary Leff told the Times that hotel chains regularly offer member rates below Expedia’s prices. He pointed to declining commissions as a reason to question claims of monopoly pricing power.
