The suspected space rock, roughly the size of a cantaloupe, is believed to be a fragment of a “fireball” meteor that exploded over the Houston area, part of a recent uptick in such sightings across the U.S., according to the report. Witnesses described a loud boom as the object tore through the home, ricocheting off the floor and ceiling before coming to rest. From an insurance perspective, the claim likely falls under the ever-handy “falling objects” peril typically covered in standard homeowners policies — a category that, while often associated with tree branches or the occasional rogue satellite dish, apparently also extends to interplanetary debris. While meteorite strikes remain exceedingly rare, they’re not unheard of. Similar incidents have been reported in recent years in the U.S., Europe and Canada, occasionally causing property damage and, in very rare cases, injury.
