Florida authorities say a man submitted insurance applications for 41 luxury vehicles he didn’t own as part of an alleged scheme to obtain more than $200,000 in premium refunds. The applications used counterfeit and fictitious identification, with premiums paid from a bank account with insufficient funds, according to the Florida Department of Financial Services. Investigators said the premium payments were then stopped and refunds requested before the insurer discovered the original payments were invalid. Authorities allege the would-be policyholder sought $206,000 in refunds and obtained $44,704. Adam Otrok was arrested Aug. 6 and charged with organized scheme to defraud, insurance fraud, grand theft and fraudulent use of personal identification. He could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted. The alleged scheme eventually ran out of road.
