Sep 25, 2026 A group of insurers led by a unit of CNA Financial has agreed to pay nearly $177 million to resolve coverage disputes tied to child sexual abuse claims against the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, according to a motion filed Tuesday in the diocese’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy case. Continental Insurance, a CNA unit based in Chicago, is the largest of more than 20 insurers named in the motion, agreeing to pay $85 million, the motion said. The diocese filed for bankruptcy in 2020 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of New York, seeking to resolve a wave of abuse claims triggered by New York’s 2019 Child Victims Act, which opened a two-year window for previously time-barred lawsuits. Since then, about 920 claims have been filed against the diocese’s estate. Other major settling insurers include entities tied to Nationwide ($37.5 million), Selective Insurance of New York ($35.5 million) and Catholic Mutual Group ($9 million), along with smaller contributions from insurers  including Aetna, Hartford and American International Group. Under the proposed settlements, the insurers would buy back the policies at issue, ending the diocese’s four-year-old coverage litigation against them and funneling the settlement proceeds into a trust for abuse survivors under the diocese’s proposed reorganization plan. The diocese says the deals followed more than four years of mediation, overseen at various points by three different mediators, including two retired bankruptcy judges. The trust is set to receive nearly $327 million in total, combining the insurance proceeds with a separate $150 million contribution from the diocese itself. The survivors will soon vote whether to accept the settlement, according to the website of Steve Boyd, an attorney for many of the survivors based in Buffalo. The motion asks the bankruptcy court to approve the settlements as a valid exercise of the diocese’s business judgment, arguing that continued litigation risked reducing or eliminating recovery entirely if the insurers succeeded on any of their coverage defenses. It also seeks an order selling the settled policies back to the insurers “free and clear” of competing claims, along with an injunction barring abuse claimants from pursuing the settling insurers. A confirmation hearing on the diocese’s broader reorganization plan is scheduled for October 27.
