The French parliament on Monday passed legislation aimed at retailers such as Shein and Temu that churn out high volumes of low-cost products over short periods, imposing fines tied to the number of items sold and banning advertising and influencer promotions by companies deemed ultrafast fashion, according to The Wall Street Journal. Under the law, the price of being too cheap and too speedy could start at as much as €6, or about $6.85, per product this year and rise to €10 per item by 2030. That is one way to make a $9 dress start acting like it has a compliance department. The measure is intended to curb textile waste and protect France’s textile industry from online giants that have trained shoppers to expect a wardrobe refresh at the speed of a pizza delivery. Shein, naturally, is not ready to wear the label. The company has rejected the ultrafast-fashion characterization, saying its small-batch production model is part of the solution. Temu says it is merely an online marketplace connecting consumers with manufacturers. France is the first European country to take direct aim at the ultrafast-fashion model. Other European governments are eyeing similar restrictions, which means the next big fashion trend may be less micro-mini skirt and more macro-regulation.
