In the test, speeding fell up to 13% while hard braking and fast acceleration dropped up to 25% for those with usage-based coverage, Penn Medicine said in a news release. The team wanted to see whether programs’ safety benefits could be improved by having drivers focus on one improvement area at a time. They tested three programs — standard feedback, assigned goal and chosen goal — with all offering up to $100 based on the safety of the driving. The better behavior continued after cash incentives ended. A big caveat: The results showed no real improvement in using the phone while driving. Previous research by many of the same research team members showed success when it focused just on cutting that use with cash incentives or gamifying the exercise with points and leaders, according to Penn Medicine. “The researchers think drivers failed to change in this area because the scores given for phone use were too generous due to default settings in the telematics app the researchers used to simulate the program,” the Penn Medicine release said. “The average participant was basically told by the program that they had an ‘A’ grade for phone use despite handling their phone 6% of the time. Given how dangerous this is, the average should have been a ‘C,’” lead author Jeffrey Ebert, director of applied behavioral science in the Penn Medicine Nudge Unit, said in the release.
