The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries cited Dyno Battery for 16 safety violations following a follow-up inspection, the agency said Thursday. Inspectors found the company had not remedied more than a dozen violations first identified in July, despite repeated warnings and deadline extensions. Among the most serious findings was the accumulation of lead dust inside air filtration systems designed to protect workers. Instead, the devices were blowing toxic dust back into work areas, according to the agency. Lead contamination was also discovered on lunchroom tables even after cleaning, highlighting the extent of the exposure risk. After determining that workers remained at risk, L&I issued an Order of Immediate Restraint on Oct. 8, halting operations in the battery assembly area until hazards were addressed. “It’s rare, but if it’s necessary to protect worker health and safety from an immediate risk, we can and do close down operations,” Craig Blackwood, assistant director for the agency’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health, said in a statement. The stop-work order was lifted in February after the company corrected the violations. Of the 16 violations issued in March, nine stemmed from the company’s failure to address previously identified hazards. Dyno Battery is appealing the citations.
