The soft market conditions at renewals, dominated by the U.S. Southwest wind market, saw demand for property catastrophe capacity increase, all according to a report Thursday from Guy Carpenter, the reinsurance brokerage unit of Marsh. Property catastrophe risk adjusted rate reductions averaged 15% to 20% across the market “with some individual layers seeing deeper risk-adjusted decreases, especially at remote attachment points,” Guy Carpenter said in its report. A 12% increase in the demand for property catastrophe capacity was driven by the continued growth in insured values as well as the “depopulation” of Florida’s Citizens Property Insurance, the state-backed insurer of last resort, resulting in more insured ’ s in the marketplace for coverage. Robust insurance-linked security activity provided further supply-side strength, with 42 catastrophe bonds issued by 39 sponsors totaling more than $10 billion in limit through May 12, according to the report. This includes more than $3.2 billion of new Florida-focused catastrophe bonds for 12 sponsors, three of which are new.
