A Fort Lauderdale hotel has filed suit against the airline and the employee, alleging the attendant triggered a fire sprinkler that flooded multiple rooms and caused nearly $217,000 in damage, according to 12 News in Florida. According to the complaint, filed April 8 in federal court, the incident occurred on or about Feb. 1, 2025, while the flight attendant was staying at the Renaissance Hotel Fort Lauderdale for work. The hotel alleges that evidence proves the employee “negligently interfered” with a sprinkler head in the room despite signage warning guests not to tamper with the system. What followed was a full-blown deluge: the activated sprinkler flooded not only the attendant’s room but also several others, forcing the hotel to cancel reservations and bring in cleanup crews, according to the lawsuit. The hotel says an inspection found no malfunction in the sprinkler system, concluding the discharge was caused by tampering. Damages cited in the suit include repair costs, remediation expenses, lost use of rooms and lost profits. In its argument to hold Southwest Airlines liable, the hotel claims the employee was acting within the scope of her employment while staying at the hotel for a work assignment. It also alleges the airline failed to properly instruct or supervise the employee.
