Off Beat United Kingdom Jul 24, 2026 A wealthy tailor is taking a wine-fridge supplier to court over what he says was a very expensive case of sour grapes. Tom Reimer, who once dressed opera singer Luciano Pavarotti, claims faults in three wine chillers installed in his London apartment allowed warm air to seep inside, causing condensation, moldy labels and possibly corked bottles, according to the U.K.’s Daily Telegraph. Mr. Reimer, whose collection includes about 20,000 bottles, is seeking more than £550,000 — or more than $732,000 — from International Food Services Equipment over alleged damage to roughly 1,500 bottles stored in London. The collection was no bargain-bin merlot. It included bottles of 1982 Château Mouton Rothschild and 2012 Petrus, some worth thousands each. Mr. Reimer says a gap in the cooler doors caused temperature fluctuations and left parts of his collection looking less “vintage” and more “fridge science experiment.” The supplier, however, says the gap was a standard feature of the sliding-door system and did not affect the temperature. Its lawyer also suggested the coolers may have been switched off because they were too noisy — an allegation Mr. Reimer denies. The company added that, had it known the units would be guarding a million’s worth of wine, it might never have taken the job. The trial is continuing, meaning the court must now decide whether the case holds water — or merely needs time to breathe.
