The agency’s new fact sheet, “Opioid Overdose Rescue with Reversal Medications,” outlines steps workplaces can take to recognize overdoses, administer reversal medications and provide assistance until emergency responders arrive. OSHA recommends stocking Food and Drug Administration-approved reversal medications, such as naloxone or nalmefene, and placing overdose kits in highly visible, easily accessible locations, similar to automated external defibrillators and first-aid kits. The guidance also calls for educating workers about warning signs, including slow or stopped breathing, blue lips or skin, pinpoint pupils and unresponsiveness. Training should prepare workers to administer reversal medication, safely position the affected person and provide supportive care while awaiting first responders, the agency said. Workplace responders should call 911 immediately, OSHA emphasized. Reversal medications have temporary effects and do not replace emergency services or professional medical care.
