Face questions about whether artificial intelligence did the writing. That’s the assignment confronting Dartmouth College Provost Santiago Schnell, whose Washington Post essay about AI and university education has become a case study of its own. The essay, titled “Universities are fighting AI cheating. But there’s a deeper problem,” was flagged as entirely AI-written by detection software Pangram, according to reporting described in the student newspaper, The Dartmouth. Student journalists then tested nine of Mr. Schnell’s works published this year and reported a median AI-written score of 96%. An emailed statement explaining his AI use also received a 100% score, the newspaper reported. Mr. Schnell disputed the characterization of his Post essay, saying the ideas were his and that he used ChatGPT to refine arguments and check grammar. He said he drafted the emailed response before using AI for language assistance. The percentages are the software’s assessments, rather than findings of academic misconduct. In a Sept. 25 letter, Mr. Schnell apologized for not consistently disclosing AI use in his public writing and pledged to do so. He also noted that Dartmouth does not sanction students solely on the results of AI-detection software. Dartmouth President Sian Leah Beilock has announced an independent advisory committee to review his use of AI in academic publications and public writing.
