The insured losses also are expected to be absorbed by primary insurers as the losses did not reach the threshold of reinsurance attachment points, Fitch said. The ratings agency estimates insured losses from the storm, dubbed Fern, will be between $4 billion and $7 billion, largely in line with other estimates. Loss estimates are “well below” the record $18 billion of insured losses from Winter Storm Uri in 2021 and $8 billion in insured losses for Winter Storm Elliott in 2022, Fitch added. On Tuesday, catastrophe modeler Karen Clark & Co estimated insured losses to be $6.7 billion . Data and analytics company Verisk also Tuesday estimated insured losses to property and auto could reach $4 billion. While the storm was a “significant event for the property/casualty insurance industry,” it is not expected to trigger any ratings downgrades of individual insurers or reinsurers, according to Fitch. The losses could, however, lead to higher premiums and stricter underwriting standards for weather risk, the ratings agency added. Insurers with greater exposure concentrations may see larger impacts, with freeze expected to be the largest driver of insured losses, Fitch said. State Farm holds the largest market share of the homeowners insurance markets in both Texas and Tennessee, two of the hardest hit states, with 19% and 22%, respectively, according to Fitch data.
