Off Beat Sep 14, 2026 A Florida family’s multimillion-dollar Andy Warhol collection allegedly came with one major omission: actual Andy Warhols. Real estate investor Richard Perlman, his son and family investment entities say they spent roughly $6.7 million on more than 200 purported Warhol works, only to discover they had allegedly bought into an elaborate forgery operation, Artlyst reported. Their civil racketeering lawsuit names dealers and gallery owners among more than six defendants. The purchases, made in 2023 and 2024, included images of Queen Elizabeth II, Debbie Harry and Superman. According to the complaint, many of the works were painted in Peru and smuggled into the United States, where bogus appraisal stamps, shipping records and certificates of authenticity helped dress them for the high-end art market. The alleged sales pitch went well beyond paperwork. The suit claims the operation used an email domain resembling the Andy Warhol Foundation’s and dispatched people posing as authentication specialists from auction house Phillips, complete with fabricated business cards. One problem with that supposed seal of approval: The Warhol Foundation had stopped authenticating artworks in 2012, Artlyst reported. The family’s suspicions arose after it approached Christie’s about a possible sale in late 2023 and specialists reportedly spotted irregularities. The complaint alleges Miami Fine Art Gallery owner Leslie Roberts worked with Philadelphia dealer Nathan “Nicky” Isen of Dane Fine Art to move the forged works through Roberts’s gallery. Mr. Isen’s attorney has denied the fraud and conspiracy allegations, according to Artlyst. The family is now pursuing recovery through the courts.
