The Waltham, Massachusetts-based institute’s CompScope Medical Benchmarks, 2026 Edition examines medical payments, prices and utilization across 27 states that account for about 68% of workers comp benefit payments nationwide. The findings reflect non-COVID-19 claims through March 2025. Medical payments per claim declined or remained stable during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, but rising prices emerged as a consistent trend across states beginning in 2023, according to the data culled from individual state reports. WCRI also identified several factors that may be influencing medical payment trends across study states, including changes in injured workers’ age and job tenure, provider consolidation, coexisting medical conditions and increased use of newer, high-priced therapies. Growth varied by state, and WCRI highlighted key differences. For example, California’s medical payments per claim rose 12% over the last two years after several years of stability. Florida recorded a 4% increase, slower than most study states. Indiana’s medical payments per claim have remained relatively stable since 2022, while ambulatory surgery center payments declined following the introduction of a fee schedule for those facilities. In Minnesota, medical prices stabilized in 2024-2025 after a period of rapid growth.
