In total, more than half, or 56%, of 670 planned U.S. data centers, representing nearly $800 billion in investment, are in states highly exposed to hurricanes, severe convective storms, earthquakes or winter storms, according to a report Tuesday from specialty Lloyd’s insurer MS Amlin. Just over half of planned U.S. data center construction projects, or 51% of such projects worth $670 billion, are targeted for states at elevated exposure to severe convective storm. More than $600 billion of data center investment for U.S., including 320 facilities, are planned in states highly exposed to tornadoes, large hail and severe storms, the report also found. “Accelerating AI investment demands more advanced aggregation risk management,” MS Amlin said in its report. More than a quarter, or 27% of data centers representing $440 billion, are planned for states at high risk of winter storm, the report said. Just under a quarter, or 21% representing $340 billion of investment, are slated for U.S. states at high risk of hurricanes. Only 3% representing $12 billion are planned for high-risk earthquake states. “When assets of this scale cluster in hazard-prone regions, the potential loss severity from a single storm event can rise very quickly,” Martin Burke, MS Amlin’s chief underwriting officer, said in the report.
