Mr. Andersen, who left Aon last year, joined AIG in February and succeeded Peter Zaffino as CEO on June 1. Mr. Zaffino is now AIG’s executive chairman. The advent and explosive growth of artificial intelligence will require an enormous expansion of infrastructure and capabilities, all of which will need insurance, Mr. Andersen said. The boom in data center construction is “probably the biggest opportunity short term” for the property/casualty industry, as it will require everything from construction insurance to cyber liability coverage, he said. In addition to supporting the expanding technology infrastructure, the insurance industry is benefiting from the technology itself, Mr. Andersen said. “Managing general agents really are essentially being able to use technology and data and analytics that are available now that allow them to draw capital,” he said. Technology is also being used to inform new capital entrants to the industry. Technology is also speeding the underwriting process, streamlining operations such as data intake, Mr. Andersen said. However, “we do believe that ultimately you want the underwriter in that decision-making process.” Global conflicts, such as those in Europe and the Middle East, also require support from the insurance industry, ranging from war and shipping insurance to supply chain protection, Mr. Andersen said.
