But a new lawsuit claims one popular platform may have turned that thrill into something a lot closer to gambling. A series of arbitration complaints filed in California accuses live-selling platform Whatnot of operating what is essentially an “unregulated online casino” disguised as a marketplace for trading cards. According to excerpts published by The Athletic, the lawsuits argue that Whatnot’s flashy live “breaks” — where users pay for a chance at specific teams or cards — cross the line from collecting into straight-up gambling. The complaints, representing about 30 customers, allege the platform fuels compulsive spending through randomized formats like wheel spins and dice rolls. The result, according to the filing, is that users are chasing the same dopamine that comes with sitting at a craps table. “At some point, they even stop caring about the cards,” said the attorney leading the case. “It’s about the rush.” The suit takes particular aim at “repacks,” where pre-opened cards are bundled and resold in mystery-style formats. Critics say they lack transparency — and, apparently, restraint. Whatnot, which reportedly moved more than $8 billion in sales last year, pushed back, saying gambling isn’t allowed and the claims are unfounded.
