One of the hardest-hit areas was Enid, Oklahoma, where an EF-4 tornado caused “major destruction,” injuring 10 people during the April 23-28 outbreak, according to Aon’s Impact Forecasting unit. Insured loss estimates for the April event were not disclosed. It follows a March 10-12 severe convective storm outbreak across the central and eastern U.S. that was the single costliest event of the first quarter, with $4 billion in insured losses, the broker said. Elevated losses have been driven by hail, tornado and straight-line wind damage across major exposure corridors, combined with rising repair and labor costs, Dan Hartung, global head of event response for Risk Capital, said in a statement. “A key challenge for carriers will be seeing how updated policy terms and conditions rolled out in recent years impact how high storm counts ultimately translate into claims,” Mr. Hartung said. U.S. severe convective storm activity generated $52 billion in insured losses and $68 billion in economic losses in 2025. Weakening La Niña conditions are expected to drive continued severe convective storm activity across parts of the Midwest and central U.S., contributing to ongoing loss volatility, Aon said.
