A Chicago worker recently abandoned plans to order lunch after discovering that his local deli had replaced its menu with AI-generated images of sandwiches, according to USA Today. The strangely textured, almost-real creations proved less mouthwatering than stomach-turning. When the worker showed the images to colleagues, they reportedly recoiled and asked him to put them away. So-called “AI food slop” is appearing on restaurant menus, signs and advertisements, provoking disgust online — and giving new meaning to the term working lunch. Psychologist Stephanie Sarkis told USA Today that such images can trap the brain between approaching and avoiding something that looks familiar but unmistakably wrong. Repeated holes, patterns and textures may be especially distressing for people with trypophobia, while warped depictions of recognizable food can trigger a more universal sense that something is unsafe, contaminated or decaying. That reaction can carry a real cost for businesses. The Chicago deli lost at least one sale from a customer who said he would have ordered from its previous menu. More broadly, synthetic food images can undermine confidence in a restaurant by leaving customers unsure whether the meals shown bear any resemblance to what will arrive on their plates. Social-media ridicule can also turn a cost-saving design choice into unwelcome publicity.
