Real Simple magazine is offering burned-out workers a gentler approach to getting things done, with advice that includes taking breaks, resisting perfectionism and recognizing when a task is “good enough.” In a recent article, the magazine explored “soft productivity,” an approach that emphasizes meaningful work and a sustainable pace over racing through an endless checklist. It’s the antidote to workplace trends that have left workers burned out and psychologically depleted, as human resources talking heads everywhere have noticed. The magazine’s advice: Identify one or two tasks that matter most, tackle demanding work when energy is highest and decide what constitutes an acceptable result before getting started. “Perfectionism can produce high-quality work, but it can also turn a 45-minute task into a four-hour project,” a licensed clinical social worker told the magazine. Employers have a reason to care beyond office morale: Fatigue can slow reaction times, impair judgment and reduce concentration, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Its researchers warn that fatigued workers can be more prone to errors and injuries. An overstuffed calendar may look productive; the resulting incident report, less so. Real Simple also encourages workers to drop the “performance” of being perpetually busy. Staying late or remaining logged on just to look industrious doesn’t necessarily mean more is getting accomplished. And breaks deserve a place on the calendar. Suggested activities include stretching, drinking tea, petting the dog or briefly staring out the window.
