At its research campus in Rhode Island, FM has earned a spot in Guinness World Records for assembling the largest display of fire sprinklers ever — 1,007 devices lining a lobby wall, a collection that spans designs from the 19th century to today’s high-tech models, the company said in a statement. And while the record may be a conversation starter, the technology it celebrates is no novelty. Automatic sprinklers remain one of the most effective tools for containing fires early. According to the National Fire Protection Association, automatic sprinklers, activated by heat, remain one of the most effective technologies available for suppression of early-stage fires. In 94% of the structure fires reported in the United States from 2017 to 2021, in which sprinkler systems were present, fire spread was confined to the object or room of origin. That compares to only 70% in properties with no automatic extinguishing system. So while FM’s record-setting wall may not extinguish any flames itself, it certainly helps spread the word — one sprinkler at a time.
