The initiative follows the Trump administration’s directive for the DFC to provide political risk insurance and financial guarantees for maritime trade after traffic through the Strait of Hormuz was severely limited amid the Iran conflict. Chubb was named lead underwriter of the program on March 11. The facility will provide marine war risk insurance covering hull, protection and indemnity and cargo exposures. Coverage will be available to ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz only under certain conditions, Chubb said in a statement. Eligibility criteria will be provided by the U.S. government. Chubb will manage the facility, determine pricing and terms, assume risk, and issue policies for eligible vessels and cargo. The insurer will also manage all claims. DFC will help coordinate the consortium of American reinsurers and set criteria for ships accessing the program. Additional reinsurers will be disclosed in the coming days.
