Those of you on your fifth cup of coffee, listen up: Washington lawmakers have introduced legislation that could redefine a full workweek as 32 hours instead of 40. H.B. 2611 would require employers to pay overtime after 32 hours, effectively telling workers they can stop pretending to be productive sometime Thursday afternoon. Supporters, according to language in the bill, say the shorter workweek could improve worker health, morale and the nation’s dangerously low levels of daylight enjoyment. They cite studies showing employees are more productive when they are less exhausted and slightly more aware of their families. As the bill suggests, “the legislature finds there are equal benefits for employers. The transition to a shorter workweek does not mean reduced output. In fact, many companies have found that productivity either maintains its level or actually increases as workers become more focused and efficient with their time.” The bill, if passed, would go into effect in 2028. Just enough time to sell the house and secure the moving van.
