James Van Meter and about 10 other USI employees in Atlanta and Miami resigned on March 13 — the same day USI paid employee bonuses — to join Howden, according to the complaint. The case, USI Insurance Services v. James Van Meter, was filed June 11 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. USI, based in New York, alleges that Atlanta-based Mr. Van Meter breached non-compete, non-solicitation and confidentiality provisions after agreeing to join Howden U.S. Services. Howden launched its new U.S. aviation practice in May. London-based Howden has lured hundreds of employees from rivals since entering the U.S. market last year . In May, it faced a similar suit over its new yacht team . The complaint says the move was part of a broader pattern in which Howden recruits teams from competing brokerages and quickly transitions client accounts before courts can intervene. It cites five other lawsuits filed against Howden by brokerages, including Marsh, Willis Towers Watson, Aon and Brown & Brown. USI claims that within days of the resignations, several aviation clients switched their broker of record to Howden, including Secure Air, a Nashville, Tennessee-based charter company that Van Meter had serviced. “Van Meter and the other departing employees were coordinating their resignation and activities with one another and working behind-the-scenes for Howden — laying the foundation for the mass resignation of employees and clients — all while being paid by USI and maintaining access to USI’s systems,” the complaint says. The complaint seeks both monetary damages and a court order barring Mr. Van Meter from continuing to compete with USI or use its confidential information. Howden did not respond to a request for comment.
