They were speaking Thursday during presentations at Business Insurance ‘s INSUREChange conference. “Your personal brand is what people say about you when you leave the room,” said Dave Gordon, New York-based chief marketing officer at Gallagher Bassett. Career success depends on building a reputation beyond a job title, and professionals should identify the qualities they want to be known for and develop a personal purpose statement, he said. “If you don’t know who you are and you don’t know what you stand for, other people are more than willing to tell you who you are and what you stand for,” he said. Professionals should also identify their “portable value,” or the skills and capabilities they can bring to different roles and organizations, said Jeffrey Gallimore, a former Zurich Insurance executive and New York-based co-host of The Next Move Business Playbook podcast. “If the organizational structure changes, if there’s a merger and acquisition, you got a new boss, does your value still stick when everything is different?” he said. Employees should understand how their work contributes to their company’s objectives and be able to explain that contribution, Mr. Gallimore said. Careers are no longer necessarily linear, and employees should develop interests and capabilities outside their current positions, said Leroy D. Nunery II, co-host of the podcast and founder of consulting firm Plūs Ultré. “Don’t just attach your personhood to the job you have,” he said. Artificial intelligence and consolidation are changing the skills insurers and brokers need, the speakers said. Employees should embrace AI while focusing on the business outcomes they are responsible for rather than the individual tasks they perform, Mr. Gallimore said. Young professionals should explore different aspects of the industry, Dwight Geddes, founder of Metro Claims & Risk Management and Geddes Management Group, said, after receiving the Alonzo Herndon Award , which recognizes leadership and efforts to expand opportunities in insurance. “Your calling may be in insurance, but the area you’re in right now may not be that niche for you,” he said. He also cautioned against changing jobs too readily. “Equally important is to know when you need to stay put and when you need to make a move elsewhere. These days, people move very easily from company to company, but there’s also value in sticking it out, whether you’re working for a company or working for yourself, and figuring out a way to make it work,” Mr. Geddes said.
