As reported by CBS News in Philadelphia, restaurants can no longer automatically toss plastic utensils, straws, condiment packets and other single-use extras into takeout bags under the state’s new “Skip the Stuff” law, which took effect Aug. 1. Customers now have to ask for them, part of a statewide effort to reduce plastic waste headed to landfills. The law may help businesses save a few cents on disposable supplies and keep regulators happy. It may also create a new operational risk: hungry customers discovering halfway to the office that their salad came without utensils. “Because I’m not going to always remember to ask for condiments or a fork,” one New Jersey diner told CBS News. “If I’m going somewhere where I need to eat quickly, then I don’t have what I need.” For restaurants, that means compliance could come with a side order of customer frustration. Employees will have to remember to ask diners whether they want utensils or condiments instead of automatically packing them, adding one more item to the already lengthy takeout checklist. The rules don’t stop at takeout. Restaurants with seating for 10 or more customers must provide reusable utensils for dine-in meals and serve condiments in full-size bottles or reusable containers instead of single-use packets.
