The $916 million increase pushed California’s share of U.S. benefit payments to 21.7%, up from 21% in 2022. The state accounted for 11.9% of covered jobs and 14.3% of covered payroll, according to the analysis, which reviewed National Academy of Social Insurance data. Benefit payments rose despite slowing employment growth. California’s covered jobs increased 0.6% to nearly 17.8 million, compared with 2.3% growth nationwide. California’s $13.88 billion in benefit payments was more than the combined total for New York, Florida, and Washington, which ranked second, third and fourth in terms of total benefits, and was nearly four times the $3.52 billion paid under federal programs, according to the analysis. California payments were nearly evenly split between medical and indemnity benefits, at about $6.95 billion each. The data reflects benefits paid during calendar year 2023, regardless of when the injuries occurred.
