In Beckman v. Manheim Tennessee LLC , the Tennessee Court of Workers’ Compensation Claims ordered Manheim Tennessee to pay Nena Beckman temporary partial disability benefits dating to Feb. 5, 2025, less wages and benefits already paid. Ms. Beckman was injured Feb. 4, 2025, when a sign fell on her head at work. She later developed neck, shoulder and arm symptoms, and an MRI showed cervical disc herniations and moderate to severe stenosis with possible nerve impingement. Her treating spine surgeon restricted her from lifting more than 10 pounds but initially believed her work involved a retail car dealership and only some walking. Manheim returned her to her vehicle specialist job in August 2025 based on that restriction. Ms. Beckman testified that the position required her to spend most of the day walking through vehicle lots, repeatedly inspect and tag vehicles and carry equipment. She stopped working after a day and a half because of severe pain. The judge found that neither Ms. Beckman nor Manheim acted unreasonably based on the information available at the time. Manheim offered work that appeared to comply with the physician’s restriction and repeatedly encouraged her to obtain more specific limitations. After receiving a clearer description of the job, however, the physician testified that reasonable restrictions would limit Ms. Beckman to two hours of walking per day, require her to alternate sitting and standing and allow her to carry up to 10 pounds for only 10 to 15 minutes per hour. Those limitations prevented her from performing the essential functions of the job, the court held. The court awarded benefits at a weekly compensation rate of $431.71, calculating $31,021.45 in accrued benefits before deductions. Benefits will continue until Ms. Beckman reaches maximum medical improvement or is able to return to work. Manheim was also ordered to provide a panel of neurologists for treatment of her continuing headaches.
