Mr. Zaffino, who joined AIG in 2017 to help lead a turnaround of the then-struggling insurer, will become a senior adviser to the company, AIG said in a statement. He will join Palantir on Jan. 15. AIG’s board elected John Rice, its lead independent director, to succeed Mr. Zaffino as chairman effective Sept. 15. Mr. Rice, a former General Electric executive, has been an AIG director since 2022. Mr. Zaffino, who headed AIG for more than five years, stepped down as CEO on June 1 and became executive chairman when former Aon executive Eric Andersen took over as president and CEO. AIG announced the succession plan in January. Mr. Zaffino joined AIG as global chief operating officer and CEO of General Insurance shortly after Brian Duperreault was named CEO in 2017 and was charged with turning around the insurer following years of disappointing results. The two executives had previously worked together at Marsh McLennan. Mr. Zaffino was named president in 2020. Later that year, AIG announced he would succeed Mr. Duperreault as CEO effective March 1, 2021. He added the title of chairman in January 2022. Before joining AIG, Mr. Zaffino was CEO of Marsh and chairman of Marsh McLennan’s risk and insurance businesses. He previously was president and CEO of reinsurance brokerage Guy Carpenter & Co., now Marsh Re, and earlier held senior positions at GE Capital. During Mr. Zaffino’s tenure, AIG overhauled its property/casualty underwriting, exited or reduced numerous businesses and separated its life and retirement operations, which were ultimately spun off as Corebridge Financial. AIG has previously worked with Palantir to deploy its technology, including artificial intelligence initiatives. Mr. Rice has served as AIG’s lead independent director since 2023. He previously was nonexecutive chairman of GE Gas Power and president and CEO of GE Global Growth Organization. He retired from GE as vice chairman in 2018.
