The winner will be announced on May 4 during the convention, the annual conference of the Risk & Insurance Management Society, at an evening event sponsored by the Spencer Educational Foundation. The teams will present their findings onstage before a panel of risk professionals based on a case study developed by Richard Rabs, vice president of risk and insurance at Lakeshore Recycling Systems in Rosemont, Illinois. The case study asked for strategies for addressing fire risks resulting from improper disposal of lithium batteries. Fifty-three teams from 12 countries entered the competition. The finalists, whose expenses are paid by Spencer, are from the University of Alabama, the University of Lagos in Nigeria, DePauw University in Indiana, the University of Texas at Austin, Azerbaijan State University, the University of South Wales in Australia, National Insurance Academy in India, and Tribhuvan University in Nepal. The first-prize team will receive a $10,000 cash prize.
